A Stockman Standpipe is a simple device that can be made to aid in silencing a loud gurgling aquarium overflow. If you are not familiar with a stockman stand pipe it act the same way a muffler for a car. Here you will find everything you need to know to build your own Stockman standpipe for your overflow

Here is a list of materials you will need to build your own stockman standpipe at home. All of the materials can be found at your local hardware store for under $10.00.

  • 4’ x 1” PVC Pipe
  • 1.5” Slip Coupling
  • 1.25” PVC Repair Coupling
  • 1” PVC Cap
  • 1’ of Air line tubing
  • 1 Air Valve

The only downside of the Stockman standpipe is the potential for it to become clogged. In all, external overflows will always have the potential to become clogged regardless of it has a Stockman stand design or not. It’s a design flaw that can only be prevented be not using an external overflow and going with a reef ready design aquarium.
