Hey folks, Jeff Hesketh here with yet another salty article for people looking to save alittle money and still have a beautiful Saltwater Aquarium. Today we are talking about how to build an aquarium stand. In my article The Truth About Saltwater Aquarium Cost, I spoke briefly about the money you could save building your own aquarium stand. I know this because I’ve built a few stands and the money I’ve saved is tremendous (as Trump would say).
How to Plan an Aquarium Stand Build
The picture to the right is the ruff sketch of the aquarium stand that I built for my 260 gallon saltwater aquarium. I stated with a picture I found on line of a DIY Aquarium stand that was built for a 130 gallon aquarium and simply changed the measurement to fit my 220 gallon display aquarium.
I also used a DIY aquarium stand that I saw at the local fish store for a reference when I was planning my aquarium stand. The stand was never finished os I got to take a look at the nuts and blots of it’s design.
The width and length of the stand should mirror the bottom of the display aquarium. This will help the frame of the stand be flesh with the display aquarium. The height of the stand can be whatever you want, the only thing you want to keep in mind is the taller the stand, the more likely it can tip over.
When I was designing my stand I had the bead board I used on my second stand in mind. Thats why the stand is 31.75″ tall.
Materials and Tools needed to Build an Aquarium Stand
The materials needed greatly depend on the direction you want to take with your aquarium stand build. For me, my display is 220 gallons and thats going to be a lot of weight on my stand so I decided to use 2 x 6’s for my broads that will run the length of the stand. Below, you will find a list of materials and tools used during the build.
Here is a list of the materials I used for my building my aquarium stand.
- (4) 2×6 8 foot broads
- (3) 4×4 8 foot broads
- (3) 2×2 8 foot broads
- (1) 5lbs box of Countersinking deck screws
Here is a list of the tools I used for my building my aquarium stand.
- Cordless drill
- Rubber mallet
- Miter saw
- Measuring tape
- Extension cord
